Gentlemen of Deceit - Incognito

I may have in the past on this blog mentioned that I am an amateur magician. To  be perfectly accurate, I'm more of a hobbyist. Calling myself amateur is an insult to those who actually perform. I dabble in card tricks, occasionally stuffing them up and then not having an escape plan - something every good magician should have.
So, to feel even less gifted I take myself out to see proper magicians ply their trade - people such as Nick Kesidis, Anthony Demasi or any of the other innumerable conjurers here in Melbourne. This desire to be shown how it should be done properly has lead me yet again to Gentlemen of Deceit - Alex De La Rambelje, Vyom Sharma and Luke Hocking - in their MICF 2015 show 'Incognito'.
Arriving slightly late to the venue I entered with the magical trio as they paraded along the central aisle and onto the stage holding one red balloon each, and I crept to a chair at the rear of the theatre to watch in amazement.
Throughout the show the trio select volunteers from the audience to come on stage with them and get involved with the performance - whether it be contributing a personal item, selecting a card or thinking of a number to be guessed - and at select junctures particular numbers are written on a whiteboard at the rear of the stage, building throughout the show to a grand reveal at the conclusion.
As each trick was performed my ind was blown again and again. I have lost count of the number of magic performances I have seen in this city and of the number of times I have seen each of these men perform some of the same illusions, yet I am still left sitting in awe each time, marvelling at the ingenuity and dexterity involved in pulling-off some of these astonishing feats.
If you are a fan of magic and like it laced with heaps of comedy then I have no idea why you haven't already seen this show. Get yourself down to the Trades Hall immediately!
Gentlemen of Deceit - Incognito is at the Trades Hall on the corner of Lygon and Victoria Streets at 7:00pm until April 19th.

Preparation Time

So - MICF 2015 begins in a few day's time; I have recently become unemployed and through good fortune have access to ALL OF THE SHOWS. Potentially.
The spreadsheets have been constructed, analysed and refined. Quiche will be made to sustain us on our quest over the Festival to see as many shows as is humanly possible and I have every intention of breaking my total of 110 shows from last year.
For those of you following this madness I have compiled a list of shows this year which I heartily recommend. These are as follows and in no particular order -

Alice Fraser - Savage : Thoughtful comedy and silly songs from a former Corporate Lawyer;

Jonestown - Guinea Pigs : Moosehead Award winning sketch comedy from Sarah Jones and Nicholas J. Johnson.

Watson - Are you afraid of the dark? : Equally funny and terrifying character comedy performed in the atmospheric setting of Olde Melbourne Gaol;

Doctor Professor Neal Portenza's Catchy Show Title : The joy - and unpredictability - of watching an idiot on stage for an hour;

Dave Callan - A Little Less Conversation 2: A little More Less Conversation : Dave's A to Z of dance gets a fresh revamp;

Facty Fact Sleepover Club : Dave Warneke's oddball quiz show returns;

Andy Matthews - Themes : Intelligent, bizarre and hilarious tall-tales from a master comic;

Georgie Carroll - Nurse Case Scenario : Nurse, mother and comic Georgie brings her debut solo show to MICF;

Justin Hamilton - Snacks : Stand-up from one of the writers for The Project and co-creator of The Shelf;

Lisa-Skye's Lovely Tea Party : Like a chat show only more random and sweary;

Max & Ivan - The End : Funny and clever character sketch comedy from the UK.

That'll do for the moment, but keep checking back during the festival for reviews.
